DNA Test Confirms Identity in Red Fort Blast Case

DNA Test Confirms Identity of Red Fort Blast Suspect Dr Umar Nabi Bhat

New Delhi | November 13, 2025:
A DNA test has officially confirmed that Dr Umar Nabi Bhat, the alleged driver of the Hyundai i20 that exploded near the Red Fort earlier this week, was among the deceased. The tragic blast, which occurred on Monday evening, claimed nine lives and left several others injured, sending shockwaves through the national capital.

According to investigation officials, DNA samples collected from Dr Bhat’s mother in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, were brought to Delhi and matched with the remains preserved at Lok Nayak Hospital. The results confirmed a genetic match, establishing Bhat’s identity beyond doubt.

Officials from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, verified the results, stating that “the DNA profile of Dr Umar Nabi Bhat was conclusively matched with that of his biological mother.” The Delhi Police and National Investigation Agency (NIA) are now working together to trace the sequence of events that led to the blast and to identify other members linked to the network.

DNA Profiling Key to Identification

Investigators explained that DNA profiling played a critical role in identifying the remains, which were severely damaged in the explosion. “In cases where physical recognition is impossible, forensic DNA testing becomes essential to confirm identities,” an official associated with the case said.

The confirmation has provided investigators with vital leads into the terror module believed to have orchestrated the Red Fort blast. Authorities are now focusing on uncovering communication trails, financial transactions, and digital footprints linked to Bhat and his associates.

The Alleged Leader of a ‘White-Collar’ Terror Network

Preliminary findings suggest that Dr Umar Nabi Bhat, a 31-year-old medical practitioner from Pulwama, was allegedly the key figure in what officials described as a ‘white-collar terror group’ — a network of educated professionals linked to banned organizations.

According to Delhi Police sources, Bhat was suspected of motivating and directing other members of the module, many of whom were professionals from medical and engineering backgrounds. “He is believed to have been the intellectual driver behind the group’s operations,” a senior investigating officer said.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police had earlier disclosed that they had busted an inter-state and transnational terror module reportedly affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGH). The arrests took place just hours before the explosion in Delhi, leading to speculations that the blast could have been a retaliatory or pre-planned diversionary act.

Red Fort Blast Investigation Widens

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police, in coordination with Haryana authorities, recovered a red Ford EcoSport from a farmhouse in Khandawali village, believed to belong to Dr Bhat. The vehicle was subjected to forensic and ballistic examination to determine whether it was used for logistics or planning related to the explosion.

“Traces of chemical substances are being analyzed to establish any link between the materials found in the EcoSport and the explosive device used near the Red Fort,” a forensic expert involved in the case said.

Authorities are also tracing possible links between the ammonium nitrate recovered from a Faridabad warehouse last week and the Red Fort blast, as both incidents reportedly share similarities in the chemical composition of the explosives.

Heightened Security and Ongoing Investigation

In the aftermath of the explosion, security has been intensified across Delhi, especially around heritage sites and public transport hubs. Additional police units and bomb detection squads have been deployed, while intelligence agencies are monitoring communication networks for possible sleeper cell activity.

Government officials have urged citizens to remain calm but vigilant. “The investigation is progressing steadily, and all responsible individuals will be held accountable,” a Home Ministry spokesperson said.

A Tragic Reminder

The confirmation of Dr Umar Nabi Bhat’s identity marks a crucial development in the Red Fort Blast investigation, shedding light on the growing challenge of radicalization among educated youth. As forensic teams continue to analyze evidence and security agencies trace the wider network, the tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for awareness, surveillance, and preventive measures.

Authorities maintain that the case remains under active investigation, with further details expected once forensic reports and digital data analyses are completed.
